Limousin animals sired by bulls available on Semenstore.co.uk were very much to the fore over two days of sales at Carlisle on Friday May 5th and Saturday May 6th at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.  At a flying sale 128 bulls sold to average £7712.70.  Averages were up on the year by a mighty £1294 for seven more bulls sold and with a clearance rate of 88%.

The bull sale came hard on the heels of the Limousin female sale the previous afternoon that had seen top prices of 42,000gns and 35,000gns and 145 lots sell (plus 65 on the year) to gross over £600,000.  The two sales together saw 273 Limousin animals sell in all too gross £1,590,713. The bull sale on its own saw a gross of just over £987,000.

Leading the way was the 100,000gns Ampertaine Mozart from James McKay, Maghera, Co Derry.  This January 2016 born bull by Kype Orkney, and out of Ampertaine Glamourgirl, becomes the fourth Limousin bull in all to breach the magical 100,000gns mark.  Purchasing the top priced bull was Procters Farm Ltd, Slaidburn, Nr Clitheroe. Commenting, the Farm Manager at Procters Farm said: “Buying a bull of this quality is another cornerstone investment in the future of the Procters herd.  The sire Kype Orkney is a bull I’ve always liked and one I actually tried to buy back in 1999.”   In answer to why Kype Orkney was the choice of AI sire the breeder James McKay said:  “Mozart’s dam, Ampertaine Glamourgirl, has such style and shape that I just thought that Kype Orkney would bring that little bit of weight and power and the mating has worked out tremendously well.”

The ongoing strong demand for pedigree Limousin females was left in little doubt following the British Limousin Cattle Society’s Spring Female sale at Borderway Mart on the afternoon of Friday 5th May.   At the end of the day, a packed sale ring saw 29 served heifers average £3990, 110 maiden heifers average £4294 and an overall sale average of £4162 for 142 animals, an increase of £422 on the year for 62 more sold.

Leading the way were two Foxhillfarm Irishlad daughters at 42,000gns and 35,000ngs respectively.  At 42,000gns was the outstanding January-16 born maiden heifer Foxhillfarm Mammamia from Mr & Mrs M Alford’s Foxhillfarm herd from Cullompton, Devon.    An embryo calf she was one of four heifers at this sale that were the first to be offered out of the noted 125,000gn Glenrock Illusion, jointly owned with the Swalesmoor herd.   By the 38,000gns Foxhillfarm Irishlad, she has a Beef Value of LM49, in the Top 1% of the breed.   Taking both of the top prices home was Messrs BC and JW Evans, Penrhos, Trefeglwys, Powys.

The second top price for the day of 35,000gns also came from the Foxhillfarm stable in the shape of Foxhillfarm Missworld.  Similarly-bred to the top price, this stylish January-16 born heifer is an embryo calf out of Glenrock Illusion and by Foxhillfarm Irishlad.  She was shown with growth EBVs and a Beef Value in the Top 1% of the breed.

At 10,000gns, and again from the Alford’s Foxhillfarm herd, was Foxhillfarm Missmoneypenny.   The third of the four embryo calves out of Glenrock Illusion and by Foxhillfarm Irishlad, this tidy January-16 born heifer heads to Aberdeenshire to Mr G Morrison, Inchbruich, Banff.

Also at 10,000gns was Tweeddale Lollipop from Messrs J Watson and Co’s Tweeddale herd near Berwick-upon-Tweed.      Bred by Foxhillfarm Irishlad and half-sister to the two top-priced heifers on the day, this October-15 born was the second to head to Ireland and the Grangeford Limousin herd of Mr G Morrison in County Carlow.

At 7500gns was Foxhillfarm Monalisa for Mr & Mrs M Alford.  A March 16-born full sister to Foxhillfarm Irishlad, noted earlier as the sire of the leading prices on the day, she headed to the Northern Ireland home of Messrs D& R McFarland, Rayderjem herd, County Tyrone.
