May 2013 sales review

Semenstore bulls featured strongly throughout the May Limousin trade at Carlisle, Stirling, Brecon & Ballymena sales respectively which saw 228 bulls go under the hammer to gross just over £1 Million (£1,019,248).

The 40,000gns Plumtree Deus son, Mereside Godolphin, led the Carlisle sale for RM Hazard & Sons. This hard muscled bull, who won the Best Bull Calf award in the 2012 East Midlands Herd Competition, was purchased for the Barrons prefix as good fit for the herd’s Ampertaine Commander females. Cloughhead Umpire (sire of Plumtree Deus) featured in the breeding of the second top price, the 26,000gns Gorrycam Hazzard, Reserve Supreme Champion. Selling at 21,000gns was the stylish Goldies Goldfinger, Champion of the Intermediate section, and a full brother to the 30,000gns Goldies Comet. At 18,000gns was Anside Gigolo, the first son offered from the 22,000gns Derriaghy Enfield, a Broadmeadows Cannon son.  He is out of the Wilodge Tonka-sired Larkhill Didi. Securing a 10,000gns final bid was the red-coated bull with black genetics, Swarland Black Geordie who is by the Bailea BMW son Emslies Enigma. Another son of the 35,000gns Plumtree Deus – this time Garyvaughan Guy - made 9,500gns for breeder and Deus owner CV Lewis & Sons. Craigatoke Highandmighty from Martin Conway sold for 9,000gns being another by Plumtree Deus.  Bred from the same home, and by the same sire, was the Junior and Overall Supreme Champion Craigatoke Halo sold by first-time exhibitor Michael Coyle.

Topping Brecon was the 5,700gns Loosebeare Golddust from Messrs EW Quick & Sons, having earlier been put up as Overall Supreme Champion in the pre-sale show judged by Mr Stephen Illingworth of the Glenrock Herd. He is out of the Rainbow Simon daughter, Loosebeare Cayley, and sold with a Beef Value of LM+30 and a Calving Value of LM+1C. Making 5,000gns was Wilodge Gladiator (LM+47) from Miss C Williams, sired by the 50,000gns Wilodge Cerberus.

Ballymena saw a solid trade with top price on the day the 6,100gns paid for Scotchtown Golddigger from L & R Allison, an AI son of Virginia Andy, when purchased for export. Second top price went to Culnagechan Gambler bred by D Hume who had been placed as Supreme Overall Champion by Judge John Green of the Greenhill Herd. This bull is sired by Carmorn Copilot and sold with a Beef Value of LM+32 for 4,500gns. Another by Carmorn Copilot was the Junior Reserve Champion Millgate Hugh at 3,950gns bred by M Loughran who also received the Intermediate Reserve Championship with another Carmorn Copilot son, Millgate General, which went on to fetch 3,000gns. Second best female price of 1,850gns went to the youngest heifer in the show, Larkhill Hope, bred by Mr B McAuley. Holding a Beef Value of LM+35, she is sired by Ampertaine Commander and was purchased by Cowporation, Ablasserdam, Netherlands.

At Stirling, and heading to Knocknagael Farm, was the 4,500gns Emslies Goldenballs from Harry Emslie, an AI son of the 22,000gns Derriaghy Enfield.
