Milbrook Alistair doing the business in Australia - and Ireland!

Following the export of Milbrook Alistair semen to Australia in 2009 through Semenstore, three years on and two of his daughters have been sold at auction in Australia selling for $18,000 (£11,750) and $8,000 respectively. These represent huge prices for Australia - with $11,000 being the previous record-priced heifer sold in 2012.

The two heifers were sold at a Dispersal Sale of the Willow Park Herd on behalf of Max & Val Atkins in New South Wales. Securing Australia’s leading heifer price in the 2012 year at $18,000 was Willow Park Finesse purchased by the Van der Drift Family. The previous highest price of $11,000 was at the Australian National Show earlier in the year. A second daughter later made $8,000.

The Irish-bred Milbrook Alistair was purchased by E Blenkhorn & Son, Elder Farm, Willitoft, Goole, East Yorkshire in 2007 for 16,000 euros and has been influential in the family’s Elderberry Limousin Herd as well as securing significant semen sales through www.semenstore.co.uk.

The homebred young bull, Elderberry Galahad (born 26/09/11), another sired by Milbrook Alistair, has been sold to the Irish-based Dovea Genetics, Co Tipperary, Eire. Galahad is the first calf out of a heifer that the Blenkhorns purchased privately in France called Diablesse who is a daughter of the noted French bull Highlander. She also carries in her dam line Cassis, the sire of the Neuf and Remix, and Nelombo.

This sale came as a result of Dovea Genetics searching for a new easy calving and maternal sire which led them to Milbrook Alistair who carries some of the highest figures in the Limousin breed for Gestation Length (-7.8; index 183), Birth Weight (-1.9; index 150), Calving Value (+12; index 179)  and Maternal Production Value (+41; index 139).

Says breeder Neil Blenkhorn: “After seeing photographs of Elderberry Galahad online, Dovea visited the farm in July and inspected the bull, who at the time was still suckling his mother. The obvious natural docility of both Galahad and his mother, together with a combination of the dam’s breed character and quality, the width and muscling of the calf, and the health status at Elderberry helped convince them that he was the right choice - and a deal was struck.”

Following vet inspections and rigorous health testing the bull was delivered to Cogent at Chester where semen will be taken.

Adds Neil: “We are very proud to have bred an AI sire that has the qualities we truly believe are at the heart of the Limousin breed and hope that he makes as much impact as his sire Milbrook Alistair.”

Milbrook Alistair semen is available from www.semenstore.co.uk priced at £20 + VAT per straw
