Semenstore bulls sire the Champions at Welsh Winter Fair, East of England Smithfield, and Borderway Agri Expo

The amazing level of performance and consistency of Limousin cattle at the year ending Winter Primestock events was again in evidence with the breed winning six ‘major’ championships on offer across the United Kingdom.  Championship wins were secured at the English Winter Fair, Royal Welsh Winter Fair, and Allams (N.Ireland).  Other titles secured included the East of England Smithfield, Countryside Live and Borderway Agri Expo events respectively. was again to the fore with many of the prize winning animals sired by bulls available on the site. 

Leading the way was Dermot & Gareth Small’s Limousin-cross heifer Khaleesi, who took a historic first Smithfield Overall Championship win for a Northern Irish exhibitor. The heifer went on to sell for £9,000 post the Smithfield event. Khaleesi is a daughter of the noted crossbred calf breeder Swarland Eddie and was bred by fellow Northern Irishman James Alexander, Randalstown. As well as the Smithfield title she was also Supreme Champion at the Borderway Agri Expo; Reserve Heifer Champion at LiveScot; and Reserve Commercial Champion at Balmoral back in May.

The Judge Wendy Morgan, speaking at the Smithfield event said: “She’s an exceptionally well-put-together heifer with a balance of fleshing throughout and a great cover across her loin and her plates.”

Up at LiveScot held at Lanark Market (formerly Scottish Winter Fair), securing the Butchers' championship, and the award for Heaviest Butchers’ Animal, was Grant Cook with another Swarland Eddie son, The Gambler (732kgs).

Other Show successes to Swarland Eddie’s name have included siring the 2013 Balmoral Commercial Champion Steady Eddie as well as the Reserve Champion Eddie Rocket.

Meanwhile, the pedigree heifer Sarkley Ilomena bred and exhibited by EH Pennie & Sons, Gwern-Yr-Ychain, Montgomery, Powys took the Overall Supreme Championship at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair. Brought out by Chris & Nigel Pennie, she went on to sell in the post-show auction for £5,100 to one of the Judges and butcher Jimmy Mulholland, Midtown Farm, Great Orton, Carlisle of the Liscon Limousin herd.  Two judges finalised the Championships and Jimmy Mulholland in tandem with David Plested commented on Sarkley Ilomena:  ‘a heifer with everything, she is full of meat, thick right through and with tremendous hindquarters.’

A twin born in May 2013, the 622kg Champion, Sarkley Ilomena, was got by AI and is sired by the Wilodge Vantastic son, Plumtree Fantastic, and is out of Sarkley Vilomena.

Plumtree Fantastic is by Wilodge Vantastic and is out of the noted Bankdale Amber.  Semen from this bull is available on Semenstore at £20 per straw.

Back up at LiveScot, winning the Champion Young Breeders Animal was Jennifer Hyslop, Balluskie Farm, Barrhill, Girvan with Mini Me, a March born calf by Ampertaine Commander and out of the noted Mamma Mia.  Ampertaine Commander semen is available for £30 per straw. 

Also at LiveScot, Donald MacPherson and Jock Currie's Sixteen Drops won the Reserve Steer Championship.  This Michael Durno-bred beast weighed 512kg and is by the 25,000gns Bailea Black BMW.  Semen from the Requin sired 25,000gns Bailea Black BMW is available on Semenstore at £25 per straw.
